Our Barcelona adventure and other travel stories

I made a selection of our favourite selfies Michael took last year during our sabbatical.

Cava is the protected name for sparkling wine that is produced in Catalonia – its production process is similar to Champagne, however, more reasonably priced than the French one. Sant Sadurni d´Anoia is the town – just 45 minutes away from Barcelona – where 90% of the Cava production takes place. So, for the 75th birthday of Michael´s father we planned a surprise day in the wine area. We could easily get… Read More

Now that full spring is in progress I can really recommend you to have a lunch menu in one of the following sunny beach restaurants. The prices for a 3-course menu vary from 15 Euro to 20 Euro including bread and a drink (sometimes also coffee). Ca La Nuri Xiroi, Pg. Marítim de la Nova Icària, 38 (Playa Nova Icària) This is the good spot to have lunch or dinner by the… Read More

The Barcelona winter sky is just amazing. Generally, even on a grey day (which we do not have that often here) the winter feels so different from back home in the Netherlands or Germany. The clouds are so much higher which provides a complete different feeling. January was also a party month for us. Our friend Victoria visited us with her niece and we had a great time at the Harlem Jazz… Read More

It is about time to mention a few more restaurants where we had really good food. Two of them even have a more local flair as they are not overrun by tourists. Arcano, Carrer dels Mercaders 10, 9, 08003 Barcelona The restaurant is located in a 17th century stable and has a very cosy atmosphere with its catacomb style rooms. It is in the middle of the chic Born neighbourhood. They serve… Read More

Last Sunday we went out of town with my former manager, George. He was my manager at SAP when I worked in Barcelona in 2011 and 2012. George suggested to go to the Montseny mountain range which we did not know yet. The drive took us about one hour (about 45km to the North) to arrive close to the top of the highest mountain. From the parking lot we walked up and… Read More

We travelled to Valencia by using Blabla Car – it is a car sharing app where you can book a seat in a car of a private person that is travelling to the same destination. Mireia (23 years old) and her dog drove us from Torrevieja (where she works) to Valencia (where she lives with her girlfriend). It was fun getting to know local people and actually I could practice my Spanish… Read More

On November, 15th we flew to Alicante. At the airport my former QAD colleague, Victoria, picked us up. Victoria and I worked together about 12 years ago and fortunately we never lost contact. I remember wild dances in our house in Amsterdam (our poor wooden floor) or at her places in Delft (her poor table) 🙂 In August at our farewell party in Amsterdam we had agreed that we will come to… Read More

The night was long, the drinks were strong, we sang along, it did not feel wrong… Hungover we strolled aimlessly through Monastiraki the next day and managed to hop from one café to another. In the evening we met Nikos for dinner in Psiri before heading together to the Gazi nightlife again.

Gilda, Calle Ample, 34 Barcelona 08002 This cozy restaurant is situated in the Gotico area close to the old harbour. We have been coming here for many years as we know the cooks very well. They serve excellent tapas and main dishes – a fusion of Belgian and Spanish cuisine. If you like scallops it is your place. Also the Carne Estofado it is definitely worth trying! Check out the app “THE… Read More
